Miami Beach is a slender, nine-mile barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. It holds what the city calls the world's largest collection of Art Deco buildings, plus Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern (MiMo) designs. Its beaches, Lincoln Road and Art Basel Miami Beach draw visitors from around the world.
Developer Carl Fisher carved Lincoln Road out of a mangrove forest in 1912. After the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926, rebuilding brought the first tropical Art Deco buildings. On May 14, 1979, the Miami Beach Architectural District became the nation's first urban 20th-century historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, after Barbara Capitman and the Miami Design Preservation League pushed to save it. Three distinct areas share one island: busy, walkable South Beach, resort-heavy Mid Beach and quieter, largely residential North Beach. Residents mix beach and Beachwalk time with arts, dining and nightlife that run late.
